4.2 Lasers and Beam Geometry

All calcium lasers, together with their locking cavities and AOM networks are on a separate optics table, the laser table. The beams are then coupled into optical fibres and delivered to the trap table. On the trap table there is only a short beam path for polarisation and intensity stabilisation before the beams are focussed onto the ions. This separation improves beam pointing stability and the beam profile at the trap. The strontium lasers and AOMs are on breadboards mounted in a rack [2, 4], with only the optical locking cavities still mounted on an optical table. The strontium laser setup was built by Keshav Thirumalai.Table 4.2Laser detunings: The laser frequencies are the wavemeter readings when the respective laser is on resonance with the given ion at low field. The detunings are the typical laser operation frequencies for () at high field () relative to the low field () resonance. They consist of the Zeeman shift, the isotope and hyperfine shift ( only) and any intentional detuning from resonance. The frequency at the ion is the sum of the laser frequency, the detuning and AOM shifts
